It’s very rare I visit a restaurant and personally request to do a request like this and offer an endorsement.
That’s exactly what happened at Proper Burger Co on Castlegate.
From the owners of Café Amore, this excellent new burger bar offers warm service, a pleasant atmosphere and delicious food.
Having replaced Café Blue, Newark’s alleged best eatery – they had big boots to fill. For me it’s a more enjoyable dining experience.
With real ale, local beers and food made fresh to order – PBC in my humble opinion offers the best burger in Nottinghamshire.

Let’s be clear this restaurant makes it clear it offers amazing gormet burgers and hot dogs and does not pretend to have pretension. I love that!
If you love 100% Scottish Beef, hand made Gourmet Burgers – this is the restaurant for you!
All of the burgers can be made to order but come with either fries, sweet potato fries or potato wedges.
My favourite by far are the sweet potato fries. Healthier than carbalicious potatoes and totally packed with flavour – and very moreish!
You can go bun-less (essential in 2015) and switch fries for salad / coleslaw.
On your table you’ll be offered ‘Sauce Shop’.
Made with all natural ingredients with flavours including ‘Buffalo Hot Sauce’ & ‘Smokey Chipotle’.
There’s also local ‘Nottingham Sauce and my favourite ‘Carmelised Onion Ketchup’ – all delicious.
At around £9 each, these burgers are exceptional value for the quality.
From the ‘Classic’ to the ‘Acapulco’ there’s a burger for everyone’s taste.
The meat is exceptional and perfectly cooked. Not BBQ cremation – these are thick, meaty, juicy flavoursome delights!
The ‘Proper Dogs’ really are tremendous.
I LOVE the local sausage – totally authentic, meaty and at the absolute opposite end of the tinned crap hot dog.
Everything tasted so fresh, refreshing & perfectly cooked.
As well as burgers and dogs there are salads, ribs and sliders.
All dishes are served on large metal trays with PBC branded paper. A very American experience – I love it.
I tasted the chicken burger for the first time tonight. With pineapple, onion, cheese + BL&T – this was stunning.
The chicken was perfectly cooked – moist, packed with flavour on parallel with the beef burger greatness.
Finally don’t miss dessert – they’re American…..HUGE!!!!
To begin the cookies and ice-cream. Every Yanks dream.
Next came the Chocolate Boston Brownie – no calories so don’t worry about that!
Finally though the carrot cake blows these out of the water! I was told “it’s the best in the world” – you know what, it just might be!

I almost never endorse or promote local restaurants for fear of offending, but I just had to write about PBC.
The best burger experience I’ve had in years! Well done Newark – this is a treat!
