Gars Chinese Restaurant Brighton

Gars is renowned as one of the most popular and highly-rated Chinese Restaurants in Brighton.

This restaurant offers a fine dining atmosphere with a warm, friendly and professional service as well as some remarkable food.

It is very rare that you can experience Chinese food of this standard in the UK, specially tailored to the discerning palate of the British diner.

To begin, I highly recommend the mixed platter of tempura prawns, salt & chilli squid, Peking ribs and chicken satay skewers.

The squid in particular was memorable – incredibly succulent with a unique, crispy peppered coating. The tempura prawns were expectedly delicious.

Next we had a true treat of fresh scallop steamed in its own shell and a wonderfully delicately-flavoured langoustine. I was thrilled that Chef did not ruin these very fresh, tasty and wonderful ingredients with unnecessary over-cooking or a distracting sauce. Certainly an unexpected highlight of the meal.

No Chinese meal would be complete with the crispy aromatic duck with pancakes……

After a welcomed break we moved on to the main course with many varied dishes reflecting the wide range of fish, meat & vegetables on offer at Gars.

The first dish which caught my eye was the sea bass. This beautifully presented steamed fish was not only attractive to the eye but a treat for the palate. I cannot recommend the sea bass highly enough.

The Cantonese crispy belly pork with pak choi was also full of flavour.

If you’re looking for an outstanding meat dish, you must not miss the sizzling black pepper fillet steak. I have never been served such beautifully tender & high quality steak in a Chinese restaurant. Superbly cooked and the presentation was impressive.

The Singapore noodles were in my opinion a wonderful alternative to rice. Perfect for our Veggie friends.

As you can see from the pictures above, the standard of the restaurant, the quality of food and presentation far exceeds your local run-of-the-mill  Chinese. Gars is certainly special and Brighton is lucky to have it.

My top tip is to take advantage of the fresh fish and certainly indulge in the fillet steak.

Finally, a wonderful palate cleanser, without panicking about the calories, is the Japanese style pancake with strawberry served with choocywhoccy  ice cream – delicious!

A fun end to a impressive meal.

Bravo to Gars on service, atmosphere, food and an overall pleasurable dining experience.
