Sunny Afternoon, a new musical about the early career of pop band The Kinks, has impressed critics in Hampstead and will now transfer to the West End.

“You really got me!” read the headline of the Daily Mail’s five star review by Quentin Letts. “After an indifferent year for new musical shows in London, here is a belter,” he said.

The show, written by Joe Penhall, features many Kinks classics and is named after their 1966 hit single.

The Kinks were an English rock band formed in Muswell Hill, North London, by brothers Dave Davies and Ray Davies in 1963.

The Kinks, who rose to fame during the mid-1960s and were part of the British Invasion of the US, are recognised as one of the most important and influential rock groups of the era

Ray Davies is an English rock musician. He is best known as lead singer and songwriter for The Kinks, which he led with his younger brother, Dave. He has also acted, directed and produced shows for theatre and television.

Since the dissolution of The Kinks in 1996, Ray Davies has embarked on a solo career as a singer-songwriter.
