Set against the backdrop of America’s Deep South at the turn of the 20th-Century, Show Boat tells a powerful story of freedom, loyalty, and above all – love & humanity.
The show’s Broadway premiere in 1927 changed musical theatre forever, and this lavish new production proves that its timeless themes, sensational score and captivating story remain as relevant as ever.
This production is immersive and more or less takes up half the theatre although in truth, the cast steal the show with vocal precision, moves and charisma.
There’s stunning harmonies throughout and 5* vocal and visual killer moments.
At times the boat gets a little choppy in he seas of confusion, but overall this is a 4* hit celebrating a 5* cast. There’s a lot going on throughout!
Directed by Daniel Evans and featuring the timeless songs Ol’ Man River, Make Believe and Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II.

The cast and choreography steal this show. From the opening seconds it is clear this is a Broadway standard ensemble.
So rich in tone and powerful in heart – the casting was sensational.
Standout nods go to the effortless Chris Peluso as Gaylord – he’s the epitome of a leading man.
Rebecca Trehearn vocally stole the show as Julie in the second act. ‘Nola’ played by Gina Beck brought the house down with her cabaret ‘After the ball’ and her general innocence and charm.
For me though, equally impressive was Sandra Marvin who played Queeny so beautifully and the compelling and vocally masterful Emmanuel Kojo as Joe. Both proved dream casting.
Sadly I didn’t leave the New London Theatre feeling quite as elated as many did in Sheffield. Having seen the reviews on the Show Boat website, it seems everyone thought it was 5*.
This show is a wonderful play with music which is meaningful, well designed and beautifully performed.
Maybe I fell for the hype or can’t help but loving the Royal Albert Hall production in 2006.
Bravo! If you like Broadway standard harmonies & choreography with a ‘classic’ musical feel this is the show boat for you! 4*
