Zoo Miami, formerly known as Miami MetroZoo, is the largest and oldest zoological garden in Florida, and the only tropical zoo in the United States.
It is located on the old Richmond Naval Air Station site, about 40 minutes away from Miami Beach.
It houses over 2,000 animals on 740 acres. It takes about 3 hours to walk around the 3 mile (5 km) path.
There’s over 100 exhibits. It truly is a wonderful day out for all the family and very good family.
Ordinarily I do not like going to the ‘zoo’, however, Miami Zoo is the most ‘natural’ and best example I have ever visited.
Unfortunately in 2019 Zoo Miami is under an alert for rabies and this not only affects the mood of the park but also some of the animals are not

What impressed me most about this zoo is that it feels more like a safari park.
I have never seen such large, spacious, well kept & clean compounds for each animal. Truly impressive.
This zoo has something for everyone with 5 areas including Asia, Africa, Amazon, Australia & North America.
You will see all of the worlds most spectacular animals from tigers to elephants & giraffes to bats.
This zoo is also interactive with endless opportunities for the kids (and big kids) to get up close and personal with the animals and birds.
There is a water park for the small kids and a play area for them to enjoy.
Pelican Cove, a large pond fed by a waterfall, contains various types of pelicans and waterfowl; it is adjacent to the ticket booths and Island Trader, the zoo’s gift shop.
Dr. Wilde’s World is an indoor, seasonal, interactive exhibit at the junction of the zoo’s main pathways.
The property includes a large lake, called Lake Iguana where you can take a boat ride at your leisure.
Zoo Miami is currently undergoing aesthetic enhancements, improvements and construction of a new amphitheatre although this won’t ruin your experience.
Development is also set to commence on new projects; a new entrance plaza and Florida: Mission Everglades, a Florida exhibit that will showcase fauna and flora native to the region’s Everglades that is slated to open in 2015-2016.
You can currently walk around the park in about 3 hours.
An air-conditioned monorail that loops around the zoo’s premises provides both an aerial view of the zoo and a convenient way to move between sections.
The monorail has four stations: the first is between the Asia and Australia sections, the second is located in the Asia section, and the final two are in the Africa section.
Narrated tram rides and guided tours are given daily.
There are refreshments stalls throughout the park and drinks machines can be found regularly.
You can ride around the park in the specially designed bikes for all of the family.
It’s $26 for 2 hours for the small bike and $36 for larger bikes.
The park caters to disabled people perfectly and has ramps and restrooms throughout each section.
Parking is free and there is disabled parking close to the entrance. Follow the ‘blue line’.
