Hairspray stars the huge presence & precision of Matthew Rixon as Edna (he’s 7 foot in heels!) & lovable Norman Pace as Wilbur who work seamlessly together.
I was massively impressive by Rebecca Mendoza who steals the show as Tracey.
She has the most energy, wit, killer moves, naughty comic timing….as well as stunning charm, warmth, sassiness & perfect vocals that I’ve ever seen in this country. She nailed this character from the moment the curtain raised with ‘Good Morning Baltimore’.
Jon Tsouras is a perfectly handsome & captivating Corny Collins & Edward Chitticks nailed Link Larkin with effortless ‘cool’. Monifa James was born to sing whilst Aimee Moore was (deliberately) gorgeously unlikable.
Congratulations to Annalise Liard-Bailey on her first professional gig. She was perfect as Penny with a remarkable voice and delightful knowing innocence throughout.
Layton Williams was utterly charming as Seaweed. Perfect casting. A stunning dancer with a magical tone.

Brenda Edward’s reprised her role Maybelle gloriously. What a voice, star & talent. This lady has a gift and delivers a sensational vocal to the joy of the audience. It’s beyond gospel. Stunning. She’s untouchable.
The biggest surprise was Gina Murray who owned the stage as Velma Von Tussle. Wow those lifts! It’s a wonder she didn’t hit the rafters during ‘Baltimore Crabs’!
This is arguably the most demanding role in the show. Driving the story of Act 1, she played this as well as anyone I have seen in the West End or Broadway. The choreography & delivery was delicious and the schtick in the closing minutes in the house went down a treat. A all-round star that was born to entertain!
I’ve seen this show all over the world, first on opening night on Broadway 15 years ago.
This production has some of the best choreography, talent, vocals and energy that I’ve seen.
It’s a shame the set is so sparse and dull. The set in Blackpool was slightly more slinky than tonight in Leicester, which at times was clumsy. Disappointing as it lets down a killer cast.
Usually this show is so bright and spectacular. Thankfully the council estate set that lets the show down is saved by some brilliant lighting, amazing choreography and a 5* performance – phew.
I loved the orchestra and the clever use of sound which gave this production an extra edge.
Hairspray is packed with hits!
Everyone song is a winner from ‘Good Morning Baltimore’, ‘Welcome To The 60’s’ and Brenda Edwards killer 11 o’clock number ‘I know where I’ve been’ – that song has NEVER been sung better. WOW!
The finale of ‘You can’t stop the beat’ is a glorious showstopper.
The entire theatre was on its feet and rightly so. This is still a master-class in feel-good musical theatre. Don’t miss HAIRSPRAY on tour through 2018.
