Review Gypsy The Musical Savoy Theatre

Enjoy Celebrity Radio’s Review Gypsy The Musical Savoy Theatre West End….

I cannot remember the last time a show in the West End received a unanimous 5*.

Well, Imelda Staunton in Gypsy at the Savoy Theatre beat the odds with the most celebratory reviews in London history.

Gypsy has to be one of the greatest ever Broadway musicals with powerhouse numbers throughout. Hits include ‘Let Me Entertain You’, ‘You Gotta Have a Gimmick’ & ‘Everythings Coming Up Roses’.

This is a master-class in theatrical staging. Everything is right! The lighting is divine, the set is faultless and cast offer a perfect performance throughout.

Imelda is the true Star though, with the perfect balance of maniacal obsession paired with a women on the edge. Her unhealthy obsession makes for a fabulous, hugely moving and believable story.

I last saw this show on Broadway. Who could beat Patti Lupone’s staggering performance?

Well – Imelda actually. This lady is a piece of work. Such energy. Such precision. Such skill and she makes it look effortless.

Lyrically this show is a masterpiece and master-class in wording, phrasing & punch. Not a single word is lost. You can only marvel at how Ms. Staunton is able to perform this 8 times a week. It’s exhausting watching her nail those massive monologues and epic numbers.

Visually it’s creative, at times spectacular and totally captivating. You feel totally immersed in the story. The scene changes are some of the cleverest and most effective I’ve seen anywhere in the world.

To be fair this is not a one woman show. Lara Pulver is equally as spectacular. Her voice is inspiring and she totally owns her role.

Kudos must also go to the children and even the dog in this show – just brilliant!

Gypsy tells the story of burlesque entertainer, Gypsy Rose Lee, through the trials and tribulations of showbiz! It’s brutal. We see Momma Rose literally fighting for survival at any personal cost.

It’s hysterical at times. A clever wordy script filled with bitter and sarcastic asided.

This show has already extended at the Savoy Theatre until November following its original sell out, rapturously acclaimed run at the Chichester Festival Theatre.

The West End last saw this show more than 40 years ago. Imelda Staunton triumphant performance proves London is the world leader when it comes to talent, theatre and killer performances. What pure talent she has! Inspiring.

This production feels special. It’s an event you’ll remember forever. The cast deserved every second of their standing ovation at the end of this 2.5 hour production.

It has everything you pray for in a theatre. You can see your £70 investing repaid in front of your eyes. Don’t miss Gypsy until November.
