Review Glenn Miller Story Musical

Review Glenn Miller Story Musical UK Tour 2016….

The Glenn Miller Story is a love letter to the era – a period of high morals, class acts and gorgeous brass/swing music.

The show tells the love story of how a kid born in Iowa in 1904 went on to become the most famous band leader in global history!

Packed with swing hits, you can’t fail to be moved by the brilliance of songs like; Sing Sing Sing, Moonlight Serenade, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Get Happy, Pennsylvania 6-5000 and of course In the Mood.

The story is not deep, accurate, intricate but thankfully the 1h.40 ‘fluffy’ production flies by and flows beautifully. Miller’s tragic demise is simply alluded to.

Starring Tommy Steele, he is a true British legend of stage and screen who deserves kudos and respect for his everlasting appeal and energy throughout this performance.

The sound at the Theatre Royal Nottingham tonight was sensational and the huge brass band were remarkable.

You could hear every note perfectly. The best band I’ve EVER heard in this theatre. Pure talent!

The Glenn Miller Story is a 4* foot tapping evening of nostalgia.

There is a lot of presumed knowledge required, however, this doesn’t effect your enjoyment of the incredible band and music. The fact Glenn died at 40 and is played by a man almost twice that is neither here or there.

Unfortunately Tommy, approaching 80, doesn’t attempt to offer an America accent and frankly his love interest, Abigail Jaye who plays the perfect Helen, is an impossible 40 years his junior (he died at 40).

Ms Jaye, in her 30’s, arguably steals the show vocally with her powerful and beautiful tones.

Nevertheless, none of the above matters! Tommy is a much loved Star, and has been for 50 years. He still has the twinkle in his eye and the audience loved him!

The lighting, set and choreography was hugely impressive for the scale of show.

The tap dance scenes were perfectly performed and the ensemble were all remarkably talented and gave the show everything.

There’s no question the band were the Stars of the show. They brought these tracks to life magnificently.

If you like swing and big band – this is the best jukebox production of its type that I’ve seen.
