Review Fiddler On The Roof Playhouse West End 2019…

Fiddler on the Roof has finally transferred to the Playhouse Theatre following a sellout heralded revival at the Menier Chocolate Factory last year.

Trevor Nunn has given this timeless & classic musical a new lease of life. It’s quite glorious and still feels relevant in 2019, some 60 years after it was first staged.

This production is one of the most immersive, compelling, moving & slick shows in West End history.

It’s basically a story of love, family and community. There’s titters throughout this compelling script. The theater re-design is worth the ticket price alone. The show is visually immersive and utterly beautiful.

Andy Nyman steals the show as Tevye. Nyman’s comic timing is brilliant. Balancing the irascible wit with heartbreak and darkness is no easy task. He makes this role look easy. With energy and pathos, this is a mesmerizing performance.

If you like classic musicals, they don’t get better than this!

Set in Russia at the turn of the 1905 Revolution, Fiddler centres around Tevye, a Jewish man who works hard to ensure that he raises his five daughters with traditional Jewish customs.

It’s a story of love and loyalty amidst the chaos of Russians wreaking havoc in their community.

The show begins as you enter the auditorium. So much time, thought and effort makes this show a uniquely interactive and immersive production.

Judy Kuhn plays opposite Andy perfectly as the formidably confident and devoted wife. There’s something glorious about their chemistry both as actors and characters.

Everything is perfectly polished. The sound is divine, the orchestra are remarkable.

The lighting is quite beautiful and the costumes & set make this classic, and much loved musical, utterly believable.

You get all the hits like ‘Matchmaker’ and ‘If I were A Rich Man’ which transcend musical theatre and generations alike.

There are two stunning moments in act one. The ‘dream’ sequence is breathtakingly beautiful and the classic dance number is sublime.

If you like the majesty & class of Les Mis, this shows equals that epic grandeur.

Here’s the standing ovation, walk down and bows from Fiddler opening night:

There’s no point over-egging my omelette with this review – just go and see it. It’s beautiful and as good as musicals get in 2019. This is frankly the Broadway standard & polish the West End needs more of.

Congratulations to all involved including Trevor, Sonia Friedman & the entire team at the Menier Chocolate Factory.
