5* REVIEW Bodyguard Musical 2019

Enjoy Celebrity Radio’s Review Bodyguard Musical Tour Starring Alexandra Burke….

I first saw Bodyguard The Musical in London over 6 years ago.

Back then it was innovative & a masterclass in live entertainment. Tonight I revisited the tour at The Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham – and it’s still just as fresh, compelling, moving and breath-taking as it was in 2012!

Firstly, lets be clear – Alexandra Burke drives the entire show and gives a world class, exhilarating, standing ovation inducing, 5* killer performance. She’s the epitome of a Broadway standard Star!

Alex truly delivers theatrical dynamite. It’s so rare to see such incredible & consistent talent. This is her 2.5 hour love letter to Whitney.

Enjoy an Exclusive interview with the sensational Alexandra Burke:

The Bodyguard tells the story of former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker.

The film famously starred the stunning Whitney Houston – an impossible act to follow. This is basically a love story and romantic thriller of epic proportions.

Alexandra Burke steals the show with her sensational vocals from the opening (mop requiring) gunshot!

She is the epitome of a triple threat – she can sing, dance and act in equal measure. She won the fifth series of The X-Factor in 2008

Enjoy an exclusive audio / video review via YouTube:

Alexandra’s gospel tones works perfectly with this hugely powerful and moving play with enormous ballads throughout.

Her version was ‘Run To You’ is truly beautiful and sincerely the most moving I’ve ever heard. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house during ‘I have nothing’. She’s so blessed with talent.

Even an old cynic like me couldn’t avoid the genuine emotion during her many show stopping  performances throughout the piece.

There’s only a handful of Stars who could own, cope with and perform this musical so magnificently.

Alex is utterly delicious – and also incredibly fit to deliver this hugely physical dance/acting & big sing role. She has never looked more at ease. This is a dream role and perfect fit for this born star.

I truly haven’t seen such moves since Britney in Vegas, heard a voice as consistently strong, powerful and compelling since Celine at the Collessium. Alex is magnificent from start to end – effortless.

Lets face it, she is the show…

The Bodyguard Musical features all of Whitney’s global hits including Queen of the Night, So Emotional, Saving All My Love, I’m Your Baby Tonight, Run to You, I Have Nothing & I Wanna Dance with Somebody.

The show begins and ends like a pop concert. Infectious energy.

Kudos must also go to Micha Richardson who owns the role of Nicki. So unbelievably gifted as a vocalist, impressive also as an actress. Arguably the most challenging but understated role in the show.

Enjoy the HDTV video walkdown / bows and standing ovation via YouTube:

My female companion told me Benoit Marechal was perfectly cast holding his own as the cold but seductive Bodyguard – Frank Farmer. He never leaves character. The child actor playing Fletcher was faultless.

Phil Atkinson clearly caused a stir when he walked out as the stud stalker. This show, more than ever,  plays to it’s demo of 40-ish ‘girls night out’ crowd. I just wished they’d have shut up and had more class during ‘I will always love you’. – Burke’s killer moment. I would argue they ruined the moment with their hen party shenanigans.

It has to be said that the show is not designed for a Concert Hall and loses some of it’s magic in the huge abyss of the 2800 seater. The sound is equally lost in places only saved by the stunning energy of the ensemble and the vocal magnitude of Alex. Forthcoming venues like Wolverhampton Grand are a dream for this show.

Having said that, all of Alex’s best moments are perfectly staged, lit and designed. Let’s face it, we just want the hits! The dance numbers are quite brilliant.

The dancers give 100%. The Bodyguard is a 4* musical, the room & sound is 3* but Alexandra 7*- so we’ll settle on a 5* night out! You can’t fail to be impressed by Bodyguard The Musical.
