REVIEW An Officer And A Gentleman UK Tour…

The much anticipated ‘An Officer and a Gentleman The Musical’ opened tonight at CURVE.

This sexy, exhilarating, heart breaking & (80’s rock ballad) joyfest is a guaranteed hit – especially for a girls / ladies night out.

Following the Oscar-winning film starring Richard Gere, this new production captures the spirit & heart of one of the most beloved movies in history.

Its feel-good soundtrack is a bit schticky at times, but plays to the crowd. If you like HEART or Magic Radio, you’ll love AOAAG!

This 5* cast includes the sensational Jonny Fines, Maisey Bawden, Ray Shell, Jess Daley, Ian McIntosh, Keisha Atwell and West End favourite Emma Williams. They’re all perfectly cast, raise the roof and shine as musical stars.

You can’t fail to be uplifted by this sexy, powerful & beautifully produced production.

This is basically a love story. With tragedy and heartbreak, it’s centered around a big sing of 80’s rock ballads.

Every track is a winner including ‘Up Where We Belong’, ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’, ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’, ‘Heart of Glass’, ‘Material Girl’, ‘Don’t Cry Out Loud’, ‘I Was Made for Lovin’ You’, and ‘The Final Countdown’.

True love develops in front of your eyes in this sensual and touching musical.

But, the big question is, will he become an ‘Officer and a Gentleman’?.

With direction by Nikolai Foster, choreography by Kate Prince and musical supervision by Tony Award-winning Sarah Travis – they’ve collectively done a magnificent job of making this relatively simple set look immersive, cinematic, exciting and BIG!

Act 1 was a little repetitive at times for me, but, Act 2 is all killer no filler and is a truly an emotional rollercoaster. It’s captivating!

The lighting, stage direction and sound is hugely impressive although occasionally diction was lost over the competing 80’s intros/outros and beds. Add to that a remarkable cast, you’ve got a mega-hit touring musical.

Not dissimilar to Dirty Dance (in feel), there’s a warm nostalgia to this production that anyone like me who was born in the 70’s or 80’s will adore. The story is of course timeless.

The cast in this production are remarkable and could walk into these roles in the West End in a heartbeat. That’s not always the case with touring theatre…

Jonny Fines (Mayo) steals the show with his physical brilliance/beauty and a quite extraordinary voice. Jesus, talk about the triple threat. This guy is a star.

Emma Williams leads the cast magnificently, with her effortless class, as Zacks other half. Utterly believable and moving. Their chemistry is stunning in every way – I 100% believed their love story. Their finale was ELECTRIC!

Ray Shell drives the show as the cold and brutal Emil Foley. A theatrical legend – need I say more. To hear ‘that voice’ again was a thrill. What an honour to see him live again.

Ian McIntosh arguably has the best voice in the entire cast opposite the commanding Jess Daley who plays Lynette. Keisha Atwell is adorable as fighter Casey.

Honestly, I thought I’d only like this as best, but by the end (with a tear in my eye), I fell in love with this story, this production and the entire cast.

Don’t miss AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN on tour across the UK through 2019.
