These survey findings come as over 300 school teams have been competing to become the national winners of The Bright Ideas Challenge, which challenges 11-14-year olds to imagine creative ideas to power the cities of the future, ensuring they are vibrant, healthy and clean places to live.
A rigorous judging process has whittled the entries down to the last 13 winning teams – who have already won £1,500 for their schools.
This Friday the regional winners will gather for a VIP STEM experience at Imperial College London where they will build prototypes of their ideas before Rachel Riley, Shell’s STEM Education Ambassador, crowns the National Champions and awards them £5,000 for their school.
With a passion for popularising maths and the sciences, she has gone on to co-present The Gadget Show on Channel 5 (2013–14) and It’s Not Rocket Science on ITV (2016).
In 2013 she was a contestant on the BBC celebrity dance show Strictly Come Dancing.
