Enjoy an Exclusive interview with Matthew and Alex Belfield….
The playwright Richard Bean began his career on stunning for at the Royal Court back in 1999 with TOAST.
It’s a traditional piece based on the dramatist’s own experience of working in bread factory in his native Hull when he was 18.
There’s a ton of laughs, sarcasm & humour, as you wold expect, combined with moments of pathos.
Bean seems to grasp that laughs can be the backbone of a griping compelling plot. The ‘banter’ (hate that word) during the Sunday night shift turns into something incredibly dramatic!
When the production line gets jammed and the workers have to go into the oven to try to get it started again, has you on the edge of your seat.
Matthew Kelly gets top-billing for a reason with his perfectly observed performance as Walter ‘Nellie’ Nelson, the beaten work-horse of the bakery.
This show undoubtedly crescendos into a moving, powerful and bloody funny piece of meaningful entertainment. 4*
