Sayer began his music career co-writing songs with David Courtney, including “Giving It All Away”, which gave Roger Daltrey of The Who his first solo hit in 1973.
The same year, Sayer began his career as a recording artist under the management guidance of Adam Faith, who signed Sayer to the Chrysalis label in the UK and Warner Bros. Records in the USA.
His debut single “Why Is Everybody Going Home” failed to chart, but he shot to national prominence in the UK with his second single, the plaintive music hall-styled song “The Show Must Go On”, which Sayer memorably performed on British television wearing a pierrot costume and make-up.
The single went quickly to #2 on the UK chart, as did his debut album Silverbird, for which Sayer wrote nine of the eleven tracks; the other two tracks were co-written with Courtney, who co-produced the album with Adam Faith.
Interview recorded by Alex Belfield for Celebrity Radio 13th July 2015.
I had no Idea just how talented Leo Sayer really is. When I was growing up in the ’70s I listened to You Make Me Feel
Ike Dancing and When I Need You…but earlier this year I was listening to Three Dog Night singing The Show Must Go On,and I remembered that Leo wrote so I decided to listen to his version and it was great, so I checked out his other songs and I became a fan that night! I didn’t know what I was missing all these years. He is a very intelligent and caring man, too.
Great to be able to claim Leo as an Aussie. Grew up with his wonderful music and recently saw him in concert at Ipswich. Wow! He has the energy of an 18 year old and more talent than you can shake a stick at. Would love to meet him one day…’Just a boy’ shaped my teenage years. Such a legend, such a great person AND…an Aussie 🙂
PS: Great interview too.
