Hank Marvin is an English musician, icon, innovator & world famous guitarist.
It’s been 60 years since the man who introduced the Fender Stratocaster to the UK, picked up his first musical instrument.
He’s best known as the lead guitarist for the Shadows. The group, which primarily performed instrumentals, was formed as a backing band for vocalist Cliff Richard.
Marvin has a distinctive guitar sound and appearance, primarily using a clean sound with distinctive echo and vibrato giving a dreamy effect. This unique sound inspired a generation of performers.

When Marvin was 16, he travelled with his Rutherford Grammar School friend Bruce Welch to London, where he met Johnny Foster, Cliff Richard’s manager, at The 2i’s Coffee Bar in Soho.
Here’s Alex & Hank in London:
Foster was looking for a guitarist for Richard’s upcoming tour of the UK, and Marvin agreed to join as long as there was also a place for Welch. They joined The Drifters.
The ‘The Shadows’ later hooked up with Cliff Richard to form one of the UK’s most loved, talented, popular and iconic bands in history.
With hits including Apache, Summer Holiday, Young Ones & Devil Woman – he’s done it all!
Hanks 14 track self-titled CD is released June 2014.
It’s the first new release since 2007’s UK Top 10 Guitar Man, for the man whose legendary achievements were restated yet again in The Times in February 2014, when he was listed as Number 2, amongst the world’s greatest guitar players and The Shadows amongst the greatest groups!
