It is very rare that I am genuinely taken aback by a property’s fascade, entrance, room, service and hospitality – but Castle House in Hereford ticked all of the boxes.

This stunning property oozes personality, warmth and history and is everything you dream of in a luxury hotel.

The building screams history. The location, backing onto a former moat with private grounds, couldn’t be more perfect.

Castle House does not celebrate a rating in it’s branding – Celebrity Radio awards this glorious property 5*…..

Castle House is an elegant Regency villa – once two townhouses – and holds a commanding position at the top of Castle Street, which has its own elegant, balconied architecture.

The hotel sits beside what remains of the old castle moat, now just a reminder of Hereford’s strategic importance.

After the Civil War in the 17th century, the castle was demolished completely and the area landscaped for use by local people.

The Castle Green now forms the heart of the city, and the old castle moat is overlooked by the garden.

The elegant refurbishment of this property makes it one of the most memorable and welcoming hotels in the UK.

I stayed in the Royal Suite, room 7, with a gorgeous four poster bed.

This glorious room is spacious, modern but classically furnished with many touches that would easily qualify it to be 5*.

The Royal Suite offers a relaxing seating area with two chairs and a couch.

There is also a spacious office desk overlooking the picturesque road beneath.

The room comes complete with 2 plasma screen TV’s – on in the lounge area, the other overlooking the bed.

The bed is the epitome of decadence….

What is so lovely about the Castle House Hotel is that they offer little touches that are so special.

Obviously they offer high end shampoo etc, slippers and dressing gowns, however, it’s things like fresh fruit in room that you do not expect.

Also, I loved the fresh milk in the fridge – I hate those packets of milk that ‘never goes off’….not to be trusted.

The room comes with lovely tea and filtered coffee plus luxury hot chocolate & biscuits.

Most surprisingly was the lovely touch of a glass of sherry on arrival. Classy touch.

Castle House offers free Wifi throughout the building.

Breakfast at Castle House, as you would expect, is hugely impressive.

Again, a fine dining affair with buffet option of cereals, juices, pastries and fresh fruit to begin.

You are then served a selection of freshly cooked options with local ingredients.

I couldn’t resist the Finnan Haddock & Poached Egg….

Both were perfectly prepared and such a light, healthy and enjoyable start to the day.

Of course most people opt for the Full English Breakfast.

With rare breed sausage, Hereford apple and potato cake, free range eggs to your taste, mushroom, tomatoes, black pudding and local bacon.

This will set you up perfectly for the day!

Castle House has a lovely bar at the bottom of the grand staircase, perfect for a cocktail before dinner. They also offer a ‘Bristo menu in this area.

The bathroom in the Royal Suite is humble but plenty big enough for purpose however it may be deemed a little small by some considering the incredible size and decadence of the room.

It is obviously modern, has everything you will need and the shower is brilliantly powerful and easily controlled.

The restaurant at Castle House is as elegant as the rooms.

Offering an a la carte menu and taster option, there is something for everyone.

The menu celebrates seasonal and local ingredients. Expectations are high as Hereford is renowned for its quality.

We opted for the £50 taster menu – by far the best option for flavours and certainly offers exceptional value for money.

You are welcomed with canapes before dinner and the meal opens with a lovely amuse bouche. This was followed by a delicious soup and then gorgeously tender and flavoursome coarse terrine.
