REVIEW On Your Feet UK TOUR Gloria Estefan Musical 2019…

ON YOUR FEET! is the feelgood Gloria Estefan musical which will tour the UK through 2020 and returns to the West End in summer 2020!

We visited at the glorious Nottingham Theatre Royal all this week! BOOK HERE!

It’s the inspiring true story about heart, heritage and two people who believed in their talent and each other to become an international sensation – Gloria and Emilio Estefan.

It’s also an incredibly timely story about two immigrants finding ‘home’ in America.

From the second this show begins you’re immediately captivated by the vivacious cast, stunning Live band and a star who drive the entire show – Philippa Stefani.

This show is LOUD! Arguably (and deliberately) too loud in places but it is undoubtedly packed with Latin soul, passion & heart.

This is a musical if of and for the people. The show is not trying to be clever, pretencious or arty. It’s takes the jukebox musical to the next level in much the same way that Jersey Boys did with Frankie Valli.

It’s essentially a story of love, hope and tenacity….with fab tunes mixed in.

Gloria Estefan’s hits are utterly compelling and uplifting. The percussion is inspiring.

Tbh, I’d go and watch this show just to hear the band! Inspired.

Gloria’s story is fascinating. This truly is the feel-good show of the Summer with some moving moments involving her father and a life changing accident.

Originally directed by Jerry Mitchell with choreography by Sergio Trujillo, ON YOUR FEET! features hits including “Rhythm is Gonna Get You,” “Conga,” “Get On Your Feet,” “Don’t Want To Lose You Now,” “1-2-3” and “Coming Out of the Dark.”

This show is driven by 3 elements. The ‘Stars’, dancers and band…

George Ioannides is absolutely charming as Emilio and has grown into the role bigtime since opening night at Curve. Hugely impressive and perfectly cast.

Obviously he’s a nice bit of trouser too – or should I say shorts. His moves and charm is utterly believable.

Gloria is played by the delicious Philippa Stefani who was born to play this role not just vocally but physically too. She’s cheeky, cute and hot (physically & vocally in equal measure – essential).

You need sass to ‘own Gloria’ – the entire story is about tenacity. Philippa is a glorious Gloria.

Together Philippa and George created an infectious & utterly believable performance.

Enjoy the standing ovation @ opening night @ Curve with Christina:

Nods also to Hollie Cassar who got big laughs as Grandma – perfect. The kids did a great job too setting up the story. They collectively added the narrative & heart of the show.

If I were to be critical I would suggest the show becomes a bit shouty and OTT at times although after 6 months this is clearly deliberate and as directed.

These are not simple songs…and seemingly every song ends up in the rafters. The percussion once again is sensational.

On Your Feet is a rare new musical that creates a unique atmosphere that feels timeless. The finale is one of the best in history due to the scale. I applaud the producers for not cutting the ensemble or band on tour – this would literally kill the show.

On Your Feet! remains captivating because of the choreography and band.

The band are incredible, the set is simple but clever through projection & the talent is remarkable.

Choreography was mesmerizing at times and the lighting was excellent.

The script is tight, packed with great LOL gags for all the family and the show flies along.

The dancers are sensational, on fire during ensemble numbers, leading to the best finale since Mamma Mia. You’ll be On Your Feet guaranteed!
